The Future is Fluid
Telling the story of a generation who demand to live in a world that is free, presenting ‘The Future is Fluid’.
The film, directed by Jade Jackman and Irregular Labs, is titled “The Future is Fluid” and centers around the concept gender fluidity through the eyes of 13 individuals from around the world. The young adults range between 15 and 25, and hail from Brazil, Canada, India, Italy, the UAE, UK, United States, Singapore, and South Africa.

In a press release from the brand, Gucci explained that the film
“explores what ‘gender’ means to Gen Z around the world,
adding, “Jackman’s style blurs the line between fact and fairytale, telling a story of a generation demanding to live in a world that is free.” In the film (which can be viewed in full at the bottom of this article), one young adult poignantly explains, “One of the ways that I think we need to be looking at educating society and educating people to have them understand the gender spectrum because you can’t accept something without understanding it first.” Another adds, “A more fluid approach to gender would allow people to really explore and try out their true authentic selves because I think a lot of people actually don’t really know what that is."

Of course, gender fluidity is a complex concept that touches every facet of our lived reality, but one of the most gendered customs still enforced by our society is fashion. Clothes are still separated and marketed by gender, and the idea of men wearing makeup or crop tops, or women letting their facial hair grow, still elicits strong reactions out of people — and it shouldn't. Through "The Future Is Fluid," Jade Jackman and Irregular Labs seek to disrupt archaic gender norms and combat "bias driven by age and by society's heteronormative default" — and this beautiful, compelling film is truly a step in the right direction.
